Why Math Word Problems Are Hard for Kids — and 7 Ways Parents Can Help
Has your child ever looked at a math word problem and said, “I don’t know what to do,” even though they know how to add, subtract, multiply, or divide?
That is extremely common.
Word problems require children to do several things at once. They have to read the question carefully, understand the situation, decide which information matters, choose the correct math operation, solve the problem, and then decide whether the answer makes sense.
In other words, a child can understand the math itself and still struggle with the problem.
The good news is that word-problem skills can improve with the right kind of practice.
1. Have Your Child Explain the Problem Before Doing Any Math
Before reaching for a pencil or calculator, ask:
“What is this problem asking you to find?”
If your child cannot explain the question in their own words, they probably are not ready to solve it yet.
Encourage them to describe the situation as if they were telling you a short story.
For example:
“Maria had 18 apples and gave 7 away. We need to find out how many she has left.”
Once the child understands the story, the math often becomes much easier.
2. Separate Important Information From Extra Information
Some word problems include several numbers or details.
Children may assume that every number must be used.
Teach your child to ask:
“Which numbers actually help me answer the question?”
They can circle or underline the important information and ignore anything that does not matter.
This simple habit can make complicated-looking problems much less intimidating.
3. Do Not Rely Only on “Key Words”
Children are sometimes taught that words such as total mean addition or left means subtraction.
Those clues can help, but they are not always reliable.
Instead, encourage your child to think about what is actually happening.
Ask:
“Are we putting things together, taking something away, comparing amounts, or dividing something into groups?”
Understanding the situation is much more dependable than hunting for one magic word.
4. Draw the Problem
Many children understand a word problem much better when they can see it.
If a problem says there are 24 cookies divided equally among 6 children, your child could draw six circles and distribute the cookies among them.
For older children, a quick diagram, number line, table, or simple sketch may be enough.
The drawing does not have to look good.
Its only job is to help the child understand the relationship between the numbers.
5. Ask Your Child to Estimate Before Solving
Before doing the exact calculation, ask:
“About what should the answer be?”
Suppose a problem asks your child to multiply 49 × 6.
They might estimate:
“About 50 × 6, so the answer should be around 300.”
Then if they calculate an answer of 2,940, they immediately know something probably went wrong.
Estimation helps children develop number sense instead of simply trusting whatever number appears at the end of a calculation.
6. Have Your Child Explain How They Got the Answer
After solving the problem, do not stop with:
“Is the answer right?”
Ask:
“Tell me how you figured it out.”
A child who can explain why they chose addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division probably understands the problem.
If they cannot explain their reasoning, they may have guessed the operation or followed a memorized procedure without really understanding it.
Explaining the answer strengthens both math skills and confidence.
7. Practice One Type of Problem at a Time
A worksheet containing several different types of word problems can overwhelm a child who is already struggling.
Start with one skill.
For example, spend a few days working only on addition and subtraction word problems.
Once your child becomes comfortable identifying those situations, introduce multiplication or division.
Building one skill at a time is usually more effective than trying to fix everything in one homework session.
Sometimes the Problem Is Not Math
One important thing for parents to remember is that word problems combine reading and math.
If your child understands the calculation but repeatedly misunderstands the question, the underlying difficulty may involve reading comprehension or vocabulary.
A phrase such as “how many more,” “each group,” “remaining,” or “difference between” can completely change what the child needs to do.
That is why improving reading skills can sometimes improve math performance too.
